The UMPC seems to becoming a more popular choice for people who are on the move as they are much easier to transport around with you while traveling. There are a few Ultra Mobile PC’s on the market however; there is only one that has had all the attention, and that is the ASUS Eee PC. Asus has not really had much competition in this area, but this could be about to change with the release of the MSI Wind notebook. So what has the Asus Eee PC got to offer? Well firstly Asus have two models of their popular UMPC Eee 700 series and the Eee 900 Series. The 700 series was the first out and did prove popular however; at only 7-inches It seemed to be a little on the small side. The standard Eee PC 700 only had a 2GB solid-state drive and just 256 MB, but a later model see this increased to 512 MB of RAM.Asus learned a lot from their first attempt which was great news for when they released the larger Eee 900 Series, as you would expect the new model had a more popular larger screen and a full size keyboard with a multi-touch trackpad. This new machine now had the choice of either Linux or Windows XP OS.

Toshiba Satellite Pro A100-415

Toshiba has a good reputation for being able to build budget laptops that don't look like they've been put together with the leftovers from the factory floor. Thankfully the Satellite Pro A100 reinforces this view as, despite its rock-bottom online price of under £400, it certainly doesn't have the look of a budget machine.
The spec isn't exactly going to set the world alight and it's a tad on the heavy side for frequent flyers, but this laptop might still be a decent buy for general use around the home.
DesignFor a budget laptop, the Satellite Pro looks seriously stylish. The gun-metal grey finish is appealing to the eye and the lid and palm-rest in front of the keyboard curve downwards giving the machine a sculpted, high-class look. That said, it doesn't feel as solidly built as some of Toshiba's more expensive machines, or for that matter, some rivals in the same price bracket from competing manufacturers.
The Toshiba Satellite Pro A100-415 is one of the cheapest laptops we've reviewed, but it looks smart.four USB sockets, a FireWire port, as well as a VGA socket and an S-Video TV output. The speakers sited above the keyboard sound a touch on the tinny side, but that's to be expected on a machine in this price range.
Speaking of the keys, Toshiba has been generous with the size of the media playback buttons, but the result of that is the keys on the main keyboard have had to be squashed together slightly, making them feel cramped to type on. Matters are made worse by the fact that the keyboard also tends to flex towards the centre giving it a spongy feel.
FeaturesTo keep the price of the laptop down, Toshiba has loaded the machine with Windows Vista Home Basic. This means that you don't get to see the new Aero interface with the animated icons or the 3D task switcher. To be honest, it's no great loss, but having to go without Windows Media Center is more of a sacrifice -- it's a great way of accessing your music, photos or videos.
At 1,280x800 pixels, the screen has a good resolution and it's also bright and evenly lit. Unlike the Acer Aspire 3693WLWi and the Mesh MSI M670-S1 budget laptops, it doesn't have a glossy finish, so colours in movies and pictures don't look quite as vivid as they do on those models, although it is easier to read text on the screen in direct sunlight.

The coolest laptop at CES is probably the Asus W5Fe, but a close second surely has to be the Toshiba Portege R400, a convertible tablet/laptop hybrid with looks to die for.
It features a 12.1-inch LED backlit screen that swivels round to sit flat against the keyboard, facing upwards, at which point it can be used with a stylus in tablet mode.
More notably, Toshiba says it's the world's first laptop that is compatible with Microsoft Active Notifications, which automatically synchronises your email with your calendar. It also has what's called an Edge Display system, which is exactly that, an LCD display on the front edge of the laptop.

This standard-bending design is from Elitegroup Computer Systems, which will present four new laptop series at CeBIT that run on either Windows XP or Vista. Each has a one-letter designation: S, L, H, and G.
The bottom-of-the-line model is the S, which has an LCD of 12.1 or 14.1, a Core 2 Duo processor, and a built-in 1.3 megapixel camera. Next up is the L series, which has a larger screen (14.1 to 17 inches) and not much else to offer. we get to that screen-bender, the G. ECS calls it a “smart neck,” but it’s bound to get other people’s necks sore craning to see how it does its thing. The screen can be lifted, tilted, or swiveled in a full circle.
The top of the line is the H series, a true UMPC series. The showcase at CeBIT will be the H70, which adds a 7-inch touchscreen (complete with stylus) and a 4-in-1 card reader to an already impressive offering
